UK Pavilion - EXPO 2017 - Astana, Kazakhstan

Project Management Consultants

The Astana EXPO 2017 was held in Astana within the Republic of Kazakhstan from June 10th - September 10th 2017. The core theme of the EXPO is 'Future Energy', and aims to highlight issues around reducing CO2 emissions, living energy-efficiency and energy for all. The UK Pavilion, designed by Asif Khan with music by Brian Eno is a distinctly British take on the theme with the mission statement of "We are Energy". At the heart of the UK Pavilion is a stunning 60 metre panorama depicting a living, universal landscape generated entirely by computer. It captures the relationship between the Sun, the Earth and its climate in incredible detail through virtual day and night. At a stunning 40 000 pixels wide it is largest project of its kind ever undertaken.

The brief

On behalf of Her Majesty's Government's project sponsor; the Department for International Trade, WNY acted as Project Manager and Employer's Agent from RIBA Stage 0 through to Stage 7. We managed the planning, development and implementation of the brief, conceptual design, development, engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction.

The challenge

Acting as the Employer's Representatives, WNY took overall project and contract management responsibility for both the consultant design team, main contractor and specialist sub-contractor. The project was procured and delivered to achieve complete compliance with the Public Sector Contract Regulations. The pavilion featured a highly innovative central interactive experience which required extensive design development with a constricted period, and a team working between London, Zurich, Astana and Shenzhen. The challenges of delivery within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), necessitated building on the experience gained at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games to ensure successful realisation of the pavilion in time for the opening of the EXPO.

The result

The pavilion was delivered on on time and on budget . The UK Pavilion has achieved significant critical acclaim for it's innovative design, providing a robust foundation for the Government's wider programmatic objectives to be met.
